Best Time to Visit Vietnam
The best time to visit Vietnam is between November and April. This is when the country experiences the least amount of rain and temperatures are highly comfortable.
Northern Vietnam
Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang
There are two distinct seasons. It's hot and humid from May to October with high rainfall, but the weather cools down from November to April and it's much drier. December and January can be quite cold in the highlands, with temperatures dropping below 10°C (50°F) in Sapa.
Central Vietnam
Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang
Central Vietnam's summer season lasts from January until the end of August. The weather is hot and dry, with temperatures ranging between 26°C and 35°C. Conditions between September and December are much wetter, with high rainfall and occasional tropical storms.
Southern Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc
Southern Vietnam's hot and dry season starts in November and finishes at the end of April, with temperatures often reaching 32°C - 35°C. Rain falls regularly between May and October, but the weather still remains warm, usually between 28°C and 32°C, with rainfall typically limited to brief afternoon downpours.

Visiting Vietnam in January
January is peak travel season in Vietnam, and for good reason. The country experiences some of its most pleasant weather of the year, though conditions vary dramatically from the chilly northern peaks to the sun-drenched beaches of the far south. If you are planning a comprehensive north-to-south journey, January offers a beautiful contrast of winter charm in Hanoi and tropical warmth in Phu Quoc. It is also the month leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), meaning streets are filled with festive flower markets and dynamic preparations.
Vietnam's geography creates three distinct climate zones. In the North (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa), January is mid-winter. Temperatures average 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), with Sapa dropping below 10°C. You will experience cool, dry days often accompanied by atmospheric mist or light drizzle — ideal for city walking tours but requiring warm layers for the highlands.
Key Highlights for January:
- •Relax on the sun-drenched beaches of Phu Quoc and Con Dao islands
- •Experience the pre-Tet festive atmosphere and flower markets in Hanoi and Saigon
- •Explore the ancient town of Hoi An in cool, comfortable temperatures
- •Cruise the misty, atmospheric waters of Halong Bay (pack warm layers for evening)

Dry skies in the south, crisp winter in the north — January is one of the most rewarding times to explore Vietnam.
